Netflix is bringing Mexican-American singer Selena Quintanilla’s coming-of-age story to life in a scripted series titled Selena: The Series. The streaming giant announced the news on Tuesday.

Selena began singing in the 1980s with the band Selena y Los Dinos, which included her siblings A.B. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla. They performed Tejano music, a form of folk and popular music by Mexican-Americans. Selena went on to sign a solo deal with EMI Latin in 1989, which skyrocketed her into success.

Selena will be written by Moisés Zamora, whose credits include hit series Star and American Crime. The Quintanilla family will co-produce the project.

“Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel great responsibility to do justice to her memory,” the singer’s sister, Suzette, said in a statement.

She added, “With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives. We are excited to partner with Campanario and Netflix to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse at our story and highlight why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come.”

In 1995, at the age of 23, Selena was gunned down in a Texas motel room by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club and manager of the singer’s boutiques.

The murder took place after the Quintanilla family confronted Saldívar about embezzling approximately $60,000 from the businesses.

Selena’s rise to fame was previously depicted in a 197 biopic starring Jennifer Lopez.

Netflix has not shared episode information or a premiere date for the upcoming series.
