Actress, singer and stage director Phylicia Rashad will the director of the upcoming production of Charles Randolph-Wright’s play Blue.

“I am happy to be directing this play that brought me so much joy,” the Tony winner said in a statement, according to Playbill.com. “It affirms the importance of theatre and its power to touch the human heart.”

The play focuses on the Clarks, a notable family dealing with the negatives that come with good fortune and the layers of their socially constructed image.

The jazz- and soul-infused score will be composed by Nona Hendryx.

“I am excited that Phylicia, Charles, and Brian [Moreland] are bringing Blue back to the stage,” Hendryx said. “I am thrilled to be part of a play about a family coping with life, love, secrets, and lies.”

Rashad, best known for her role as Clair Huxtable on the hit series The Cosby Show, starred in the Broadway and Off-Broadway productions of Blue in 2000 and 2001, respectively. And she has directed stage productions, which include the August Wilson classics Gem of the Ocean, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone and Fences.

The cast, theater and design team will be announced at a later date. Blue, produced by Moreland, Eric Falkenstein and Ron Simmons, will open on Broadway in spring 2020.
