Hip-hop has made its way to the John F. Kennedy Center of Performing Arts and Q-Tip is heading the artistic venture.

Marking JFK’s 100th birthday anniversary, Kennedy Center President, Deborah Rutter switched up the routine and decided to introduce the first season of programming with a year-long festival that honors the president’s legacy.  As part of the festive occasion, the Kennedy Centennial will be the go-to destination for the programs 2016-2017 season. With nearly 2,000 performances scheduled, the programming will take an in-depth look at hip-hop for the first time in the center’s history.

Hip-hop programs haven’t been completely dismissed throughout the center’s history, however this year will mark the emergence of a more cohesive inclusion of the popular genre.

As the artistic director of hip-hop culture, Q-Tip will oversee the premiere of the B-Fly commission “All the Way Live!” in addition to the Brave New Voices Youth Summit.
