Recently, a few of hip-hop’s sons and daughters turnt up in New York City to shed light on their come-up at the red carpet premiere of Growing Up Hip-Hop. WE tv’s new reality show features the spawn of musical legends, including Angela Simmons (daughter of Run-DMC’s Rev. Run), Romeo Miller (f.k.a. Lil Romeo, son of Master P) and Damon “Boogie” Dash (son of former Roc-a-Fella Records mogul Damon Dash), to name a few.

Although they’re the children of some of hip-hop’s greatest influencers, the lives of these young adults aren’t always polished with privilege. It looks like hip-hop continues to face “reality” for our viewing pleasures. In tandem with shows like VH1’s Love and Hip-Hop, it’s now time to prepare our appetites for a new guilty pleasure in 2016.

WE tv kicked things off with a lit, hip-hop-star-studded premiere party at the lavish triple-decker club Haus in downtown Manhattan. Raven-Symoné surprised partygoers when she came through and celebrated her birthday with an enormous gold, fire-shooting birthday cake and celebrity friends in VIP alongside Master P, Lil’ Kim and the show’s cast.

Also letting the cameras follow their hustle were Kristinia DeBarge (daughter of James DeBarge), T.J. Mizell (son of the late Jam Master Jay) and Egypt Criss (daughter of Sandra “Pepa” Denton of Salt-N-Pepa and rapper Treach of Naughty by Nature).

It looks like we’ll be watching the cast navigating life in their 20s, coupled with the pressures of being popularized by their parents and the challenges of escaping their legendary shadows. Who will flourish and who will fold? For all reality TV lovers, lest ye dare compare Growing Up Hip-Hop to any other hip-hop reality TV show on the air, you might forsake the unforeseen (possible) brilliance of some fresh and original reality juiciness.

The trailer features drama, parental scolding and the possibility of a budding romance between Angela Simmons and Romeo Miller. We’ll know soon enough if we love it to pieces, as the debut episode airs on WE tv January 7, 2016.
