Rita Ora Apologizes for ‘Girls’, Says She’s Dated Men and Women

British singer Rita Ora has apologized after her latest single “Girls” featuring Cari B, Charli XCX and Bebe Rexha, was criticized for its “tone-deaf” presentation of same-sex relationships, reports SPIN.

Ora’s own bisexuality is referenced in the song with lyrics like, “I ain’t one-sided / I’m open-minded / I’m 50-50 and I’m never going to hide it.” The refrain reads: “sometimes, I just wanna kiss girls, girls, girls / Red wine, I just wanna kiss girls, girls, girls.”

R&B Singer Kehlani who identifies as queer said: “there were many awkward slurs, quotes … just think certain quotes weren’t progressive.”

Pop artist Hayley Kiyoko shared a note on Twitter that said “Girls” does “more harm than good for the LGBTQ+ community. A song like this just fueld the male gaze while marginalizing the idea of women loving women.” She also said that the song “belittles and invalidates the very pure feelings of an entire community.”

Ora, 27, has responded to the criticism of the song, saying she was “sorry [if] how I expressed myself in the song has hurt anyone. I would never intentionally cause harm to other LBGTQ+ people or anyone.” She added that the song represented her truth and an honest moment from her past. The singer also revealed that she has had same-sex relationships. “I have had romantic relationships with women and men throughout my life and this is my personal journey.”

Ora told PEOPLE last week that her bisexual anthem was inspired by her favorite song Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl.” The song was released by Perry in 2008 and since then the pop star has said her lyrics were outdated with “a couple of stereotypes.” If Perry could she would not have written the song in the same way.
