Roland Martin’s Suspension Lifted

After a month of being off-screen for his veiled homophobic tweets, CNN contributing political analyst Roland Martin has had his suspension lifted. The announcement was made on Monday afternoon, after CNN staffers discussed this issue. While on leave, Martin has continued to host his show “Washington Watch” on TV One, has made regular appearances on the “Tom Joyner Morning Show,” and held a panel discussion at Howard University.

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), who were the first to ask for an apology from Martin, want him and CNN to increase the visibility of Black LGBT people. But, not all members of the gay community welcome GLAAD’s stance.

“Let me be clear, GLAAD doesn’t represent or speak for Black lesbians and gays and if the Black same-gender loving community is or was offended by Roland’s tweet then that’s an issue that we are perfectly capable of addressing amongst ourselves as we do with every other issue,” said journalist and lesbian Jasmyne Cannick. “We don’t need GLAAD to stand up and speak for us. That’s what we have our own organizations for.”

Did Martin need to apologize? Is this a matter of saving face for CNN or truly being remorseful for offensive behavior?
