[Video] ‘Roots’ Star Emayatzy Corinealdi Talks Reboot

Chan C. Smith

Like so many of us, you likely fell in love with Emayatzy Corinealdi in Ava DuVernay’s understated masterpiece, “Middle of Nowhere.” The brown-skinned beauty and acting talent has since gone on to a number of projects, including a starring role opposite Don Cheadle as the legendary jazzman’s wife in biopic “Miles Ahead.”

But on May 30, you’ll see Corinealdi in a reboot of “Roots,” a re-imagining of the history-based classic tale made immortal by the likes of LeVar Burton, Ben Vereen, Leslie Uggams and Cicely Tyson. Just as we’ve witnessed with other enslavement-focused film and TV projects, there is backlash on yet another depiction of one of this horrific chapter in world history. Corinealdi understands this point of view fully, as she reveals in a one-on-one conversation with our Vice President and Head of Digital Editorial, Kyra Kyles.

However, she offers some very compelling reasons for viewers of all races, and particularly younger audiences, to tune in.

Hear what she has to say and let us know in comments if you will be going on this epic journey based on Alex Haley’s engrossing 1976 novel.
