Serena Williams Disputes Her Own Coach’s Claims Concerning US Open Controversy

Serena Williams, US Open

Serena Williams still can’t escape questions about her recent loss to Naomi Osaka at the US Open, where she was accused of cheating by the umpire. The situation ultimately spiraled  into a full-blown showdown between the tennis champ and the official.

Adding fuel to the fire was Williams’s own coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, who claimed to signal to her from the sidelines after she denied receiving coaching during the match.

“I just don’t understand what [Mouratoglou] was talking about,” Williams told The Sunday Project on Australia’s Network Ten in an interview. “I asked him, ‘you weren’t coaching, we don’t have signals, we’ve never had signals,’ and he said he made a motion.

“So, you said you made a motion, now you told people that you’re coaching me. That doesn’t make sense, why would you say that? I was on the other side. I didn’t see the motion. It was just a really confusing moment, I think, for him.

“What I’m trying to do most of all is to recover from that and move on.”

Following the accusation of sideline coaching, Williams was punished for smashing her racket on the court and for verbal abuse after calling the umpire a “liar” and “thief.” She was also fined $17,000.

Check out the interview below, beginning at the 5:13 mark.
