In an effort to position itself as the “new destination for high-quality crime programming,” the Oxygen network will debut “Mysteries & Scandals,” a 13-episode series that investigates some of the most notably intriguing crimes, murders, and scandals that shook the nation.

Emmy and Peabody Award-winning journalist, Soledad O’Brien, has been tapped to host the hour-long series, which will feature vivid first-hand accounts, re-enactments and archival footage.

“What an amazing opportunity to work with Oxygen on ‘Mysteries & Scandals,’ reliving and retelling some of the biggest stories that captured national headlines,” said Soledad O’Brien in a press release. “Through never before seen interviews and meticulous fact-finding, we give viewers a fresh perspective.”

The series, which premieres on Jan. 5, is described as one that features “power, fame, infamy, envy, obsessions and betrayal as the framework for headlines of the recent past,” according to a press release announcing the series.

“Mysteries & Scandals” will feature true crime stories with O’Brien “pulling back the curtain on a wide range of shocking cases,” the press release continues. “[The show will give] viewers exclusive access to family members, friends, witnesses, detective and jury members directly impacted and involved in each circumstance.”

The deaths of Michael Jackson, Bobbi Kristina and Anna Nicole Smith are among the celebrity tragedies to be explored by O’Brien on the series.

“Mysteries & Scandals” is produced by Wilshire Studios. Soledad O’Brien and Betsy Rott serve as executive producers for the series.
