This week’s music round up is heavy on the R&B front but Bun B came through for hip-hop. Read on and enjoy.

Bonita – “Hip Hop Gone”

Bonita is a singer/songwriter from Brooklyn, who has been working on her craft in Atlanta for the past few years. Bonita has collaborated with Dipset, Mickey Factz and more, and credits her East New York upbringing with shaping her music. She’s like your homegirl next door but with a voice and sound that is inspired by Betty Wright, Etta James, Mary J Blige and even Common and Kanye West. Her latest offering is “Hip Hop Gone,” a jazzy ode to one of the many genres of music she loves. Bonita raps and sings over an R&B/hip-hop inspired beat that sounds like it’s straight out of the 90s, and reminisces about “sitting on the stoop with the boombox blasting,” and wonders where her hip-hop went and how she can get it back. The question of whether hip-hop has changed for the better or worse sparks the proverbial debate but a good song is a good song no matter what your thoughts are with regard to the matter. Throw this diddy on at a barbecue and chill out.

Elle Varner – Perfectly Imperfect

What’s not to love about Elle Varner? She’s beautiful, talented and self-deprecating, like that girlfriend you want to get her life together. Varner channels her oft dramatic self-sabotage beautifully through music, and this is why it’s easy to fall in love with her highly anticipated debut album, Perfectly Imperfect. The singer/songwriter sings mostly about loving her self and others (and sometimes lack thereof), which isn’t new, but Varner’s raspy voice and pensive longing makes you believe her because you will most likely see yourself and your experiences too. The album includes songs we’ve already heard like, “Refill” and “Only Want to Give it to You,” but the rest does not disappoint. This is easily one of the best albums of the year and it’s available today.

Jeremih – “Outta Control” Ft Gucci Mane and 2 Chainz

This is a Jeremih song but 2 Chainz is having the best year ever. He’s everywhere. Anyway, “Outta Control” is a single from Jeremih’s mixtape collaboration with DJ Drama entitled, Late Night, which is available today. If I were you, I’d just skip past Gucci Mane’s opening verse and listen to the rest of the song. It’s an electronic, robotic and sexy ode to the wild women of the world, for whom life is a non-stop party.

The Mamas – “Love Hangover” (A capella)

Beyoncé’s trio background singers, also known as The Mamas, have recorded an acapella version of Diana Ross’ “Love Hangover.” The group is known for performing the song live to musical accompaniment at King Bee’s concerts but the recorded version without the music is just as fierce—no pun intended.

Bun B – “Turn It Up” ft Aaron LaCrate

Bun B and producer Aaron LaCrate have teamed up for an upcoming Milkcrate Athletics x Aaron Carter project that will contain a compilation of gritty hip-hop bangers. Speaking of, make sure you turn this up—seriously—but don’t get because Bun B keeps it raw. He’s rapping about the usual—being great—but you will want to listen to this before a night out in the city, or if you just need a midday pick me up. O also suggest putting this in your workout playlist.
