Janice Freeman, known for her 2017 appearance on the NBC singing competition, The Voice, has died, her spokesperson confirmed with CNN. She was 33.

The rising singer reportedly suffered from a severe case of pneumonia, and a blood clot subsequently traveled to her heart. Freeman's husband, Dion, performed CPR, but she died after being transported to a hospital on March 3.

“A survivor and fighter, and a beautiful force in this world, Janice gained notoriety through her success on NBC’s ‘The Voice’ as a member of Miley Cyrus’ team. Her story inspired fans nationwide, having successfully battled cervical cancer and living her life to the fullest while fighting lupus,” her spokesperson said in a statement.

Tributes for Freeman poured in on social media from those who were touched by her talents. “@janicefreeman the voice of hers we got to hear and the bit of life we got to watch her live was a blessing and inspiration to us all! My heart and prayers go out to @janicefreeman daughter and family,” said The Voice coach Jennifer Hudson.

“The universe is just way too cruel. This woman #JaniceFreeman was an absolute vocal genius. How she didn’t easily win @NBCTheVoice still baffles me. And now this ... please do yourself a favor and listen to her performances. And may God rest her too-young soul,” wrote television host and MSNBC host Joy Ann Reid.

Freeman was offered a spot by judges Hudson and Cyrus after she wowed them with a soul-stirring cover of Imagine Dragons’ “Radio Active.” She soared through the ranks of the competition until she was eliminated after making it to the top 11.

Despite her departure from the show, Freeman still maintained a close relationship with the cast and her coach—so much so that Cyrus offered her financial support during hard times.
