The official trailer for Devil’s Pie: D’Angelo, a documentary that explores the soul singer’s tumultuous career and 2015 musical comeback was released on Monday.
“Who leaves the scene for 14 years and comes back, who does that?” a voice ponders at the beginning of the trailer for the Carine Bijlsma-directed feature.
Although D’Angelo is credited as a forefather of neo soul, he has always had an allusive mystique. In 2000, following the release of his sophomore album, Voodoo, the singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist left the music scene completely.
“I think he has fears of being the chosen one,” drummer and frequent collaborator Questlove said in the trailer. “I was living with a sense of dread that one of these days I’m going to wake up and he’s not going to be here.”
The documentary will cover the four-time Grammy winner’s struggle with addiction, his brush with death during a 2005 car accident, and losing close family members. It will also give fans a behind-the-scenes look into D’Angelo’s 2014 return for his critically acclaimed Black Messiah and its subsequent tour the Second Coming.
