TV One’s ‘Unsung’ Honors Legendary R&B and Funk Group Switch

During the late ’70s and early ’80s, the R&B and Funk group, Switch, left a stunning impression on music lovers and the industry as a whole. It was the group’s sensational ballads that set them apart and helped them garner the attention of Motown.

Switch was originally comprised of Bobby and Tommy DeBarge, Gregory Williams, Phillip Ingram, Jody Sims and Eddie Fluelle. The talented triple threats who could sing, dance and play several musical instruments released hit singles, “I Call Your Name,” “Best Beat In Town” and “There’ll Never Be” that rose straight to the Top 10 on the Billboard charts.

Fame isn’t always kind to those who stand directly in the spotlight. Switch’s electric rise led to its inevitable implosion.

“They were real heartthrobs. What was so significant about Switch was that outside of the Jackson 5, they were one of the first heartthrob R&B groups that we had for young people,” said Cynthia Horner, editor of Right On magazine said in a press release sent to “I’m proud they were able to get an episode of Unsung. They have quite a few fans around the world, and they’re going to get to hear a story of a group they’ve always loved but never had a way to find out more in depth information on the ups and down of their career.”

On July 23, TV One will honor the incredible singing group on Unsung with interviews from the group’s dearest family and friends including El DeBarge, Bunny DeBarge, Marcus Chapman, Cynthia Horner, and Miller London.

Unsung airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on TV One.
