Underground fans rejoice! Iconic abolitionist Harriet Tubman will be leading the way when season two of the WGN America hit drama returns to TV next year.

According to a press release sent to EBONY.com,  former True Blood star Aisha Hinds will assume the role of Tubman, the Underground Railroad’s most famous conductor. Hinds will have a recurring role on the show, and will attempt to embody Tubman’s grit and perseverance, which helped her lead scores of enslaved Black Americans to freedom.

Born into bondage in 1820, Tubman successfully escaped enslavement in 1849. She then returned to the South and risked her life to free her family, and anyone willing to journey north to freedom. In season two of Underground, which will be comprised of 10 episodes, viewers will watch as  the “unremitting struggle for freedom within a divided America on the brink of civil war” continues, and hopefully, we’ll also see Tubman and her signature shotgun blazing the way to a better life.

In addition to Hinds, Jasika Nicole, Michael Trotter, and Jesse Luken will also be joining the cast in the upcoming season. Nicole will play Georgia, an abolitionist with a covert station along the Underground whose quiet confidence hides secrets of her own; Trotter will assume the role of Biographer, an astute observer of people who lives through the lives of others often fearful of taking chances; and Luken will play Smoke, the fearless second in command of Patty Cannon’s infamous gang of slave catchers.

The first season of Underground, which tells the unflinching story of some of America’s valiant, yet unsung, heroes—enslaved Black Americans who risked their lives to reach freedom–was a hit with audiences. It garnered more than 3 million total viewers each week, and made history as WGN America’s most-watched original program ever during its first season.

Executive produced by John Legend and starring Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Aldis Hodge, Underground was recently honored with three CableFax Awards, including Best New Program, Best Historical Show/Series and Best Showrunners, Misha Green and Joe Pokaski.

The show will resume shooting in Savannah, Georgia later this month, and will hit TV screens in early 2017.

We can’t wait.
