This year, WGN America’s historical drama, Underground, was a surprise hit with audiences. The show, which tells the unflinching story of some of America’s valiant, yet unsung, heroes—enslaved Black Americans who risked their lives to reach freedom–garnered more than 3 million total viewers each week, and made history as WGN America’s most-watched original program ever during its first season. Now, Underground is on the verge of returning for another action-packed season, and from the looks of things, it’s going to be good.
With 10 new episodes on the way, Underground promises even more heart-pounding drama. This time around legendary abolitionist Harriet Tubman, played by True Blood star Aisha Hinds, will appear on the show to help even more enslaved folks get free.
According to a press release from the network, Season two is “set in the aftermath of the Macon 7’s daring attempt to stage the greatest escape in history, this group of American heroes continues on their harrowing journey to freedom, with legendary abolitionist Harriet Tubman blazing the trail.”
Executive produced by EBONY Power 100 honoree John Legend and starring Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Aldis Hodge, Underground won three CableFax Awards, including Best New Program, Best Historical Show/Series and Best Showrunners, and it became the first public program presented at the new Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Check out an exciting teaser of the upcoming season.
Underground returns to WGN America Wednesday, March 8 at 10 p.m.
