Viola Davis Challenges Industry on Claims of Becoming More Inclusive & Diverse

“I want to force a culture that says they are committed to inclusion and diversity to actually put their money where their mouth is.”

During a recent sit-down with EBONY, A Taste of Sugars Viola Davis opened up about new projects coming from JuVee Productions, which she co-founded with husband, Julius Tennon, in 2011. She hopes to tell the stories of marginalized people without the White filter often exhibited in cinema. In other words, they established the respected production house, “for us.”

“I did not want to create stories where I was constantly riding on any Caucasian person’s … idea of who they thought we were, but who we really are.”

The thespian proudly speaks of upcoming projects, including Emanuel, focusing on the 2015 shooting of Emanuel A.M.E. church members in Charleston, South Carolina, and Wild Seed, based on the novel by Octavia Butler.

“One of the words I love lately is ‘disruptor.’ I want to be a disruptor … I want to force a culture that says they are committed to inclusion and diversity to actually put their money where their mouth is, and I think this is a beautiful way to do it.”
