Wyatt Cenac Hosts New Season of AfroPoP

AfroPoP:The Ultimate Cultural Exchange enters it’s fourth season with funnyman Wyatt Cenac joining as host. The show, which is produced by the National Black Programming Consortium, is a public television show that features independent documentaries and short films about life, art, and culture from the contemporary African Diaspora. Currently, AfroPoP is the only US public television show that focuses solely on stories from Black culture from across the world.

Cenac, perhaps best known for his role as correspondent on The Daily Show, recently appeared on EBONY’s Power 100 List. The Medicine For Melancholy actor joins AfroPop for a season that will surely provide audiences with a unique look at global Diasporan culture. The season opener takes a look at Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone, a film narrated by Laurence Fishburne that tells the tale of Black inner-city youth in Los Angeles who became leaders of a punk rock music revolution.

Upcoming episodes include Burning in the Sun, an inspirational portrait of a 26-year-old’s efforts to combine entrepreneurship and solar energy in Africa; That’s My Face, the story of one New Yorker’s quest for self-discovery in Brazil and Calypso Rose: Lioness of the Jungle, the tale of beloved singer Calypso Rose, a minister’s daughter who became a pioneer of calypso music.

The season premiere of AfroPop airs on WORLD TV on Sunday, January 22. To find local listings, click here.
