While attending the red carpet screening premiere on May 2, the cast of Dear White People spoke exclusively with EBONY about Lena Waithe’s addition to the second season of the Netflix series.
The Emmy Award-winning writer transitioned from being a producer on Dear White People the film to guest starring as rapper P. Ninny on volume 2 of the series. Waithe’s character is the star of an Empire knockoff that the students on campus collectively watch in the Armstrong-Parker residence hall.
When asked how having Waithe on the show as a character affected production, Antoinette Robertson (Coco) said, “I don’t think you guys realize how funny she is in the context of our show … she’s like you’ve never seen her before.” The rest of the stars openly discussed forming friendships with Waithe and how her presence on the cast is “awesome and well-deserved.”
Dear White People is streaming on Netflix.
