Troy Dangerfield, a 32-year-old transgender woman, was fatally shot on Monday morning in College Park, Georgia. Known as “TeeTee” to friends, Dangerfield was sitting in her car outside of an apartment complex in the city when she was shot multiple times.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that the victim was shot around 4:20AM Monday morning. Major Lance Patterson of the College Park Police told the AJC she was shot outside of the South Hampton Estates on the 3100 block of Godby Road. She passed away after being taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Valerie Charles, the spokesperson for Gun Sense in America, said the following in a statement obtained by AJC:

“Although details are still unfolding, we cannot ignore that gun violence remains a threat to the lives of many marginalized Americans, including those who are transgender. My deepest condolences go out to TeeTee’s family and friends as they now must navigate the trauma and pain so many American families and communities regretfully know all too well.”

Although there is currently no evidence as to whether Dangerfield’s death is the result of her status as a transgender woman, Patterson said he’s not excluding the possibility. She is the 16th trans person to have lost their life to violence in 2017 that has been reported.
