Police suspect that after retiring from a successful NFL career with the Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders, Anthony Wayne Smith went on a mini killing spree. Smith was awaiting a retrial in the death of Maurilio Ponce who was beaten, stomped, and shot over a alleged business deal gone wrong, when he was charged for three other murders.

Two of the three new charges are for the kidnap, torture, and killing of brothers Kevin and Ricky Nettles in November 1999. The third is in the June 2001 killing of Dennis Henderson, who, along with another man, was kidnapped in Los Angeles by several gunmen. Police say co-conspirators were involved in all three deaths. The former athlete's next court date is July 17. According to Smith's lawyer, he will be pleading not guilty.
