Frozen 2 is scheduled to hit theaters next year. With the release of the sequel, many fans are pushing for Queen Elsa’s love interest to be a woman with the #GiveElsaAGirlfriend campaign.

In 2013 the release of the Disney animated film was praised for what many perceived as LGBTQ themes. The Oscar-winning theme song for the movie “Let it Go” performed by Demi Lovato has been taken as a coming-out anthem. It helped to kickstart the progressive conversation.

The co-director and writer of Frozen, Jennifer Lee is open to the possibility of Elsa being in a same-sex relationship. She spoke to HuffPost about the idea of Elsa’s potential girlfriend.

“I love everything people are saying [and] people are thinking about with our film ― that it’s creating dialogue, that Elsa is this wonderful character that speaks to so many people. It means the world to us that we’re part of these conversations.”

She continued, “Where we’re going with it, we have tons of conversations about it, and we’re really conscientious about these things. For me … Elsa’s every day telling me where she needs to go, and she’ll continue to tell us. I always write from character-out, and where Elsa is and what Elsa’s doing in her life, she’s telling me every day. We’ll see where we go.”

Lee made no promises, but she’s glad the conversation is happening. Frozen 2 is scheduled for release on November 27th, 2019.
