Gabrielle Union is taking in everything about motherhood, and she opened up about the journey to starting a family.

The actress and her husband, NBA star Dwyane Wade, welcomed daughter Kaavia James Union Wade on Nov. 7 via surrogate.

In a post she wrote on Instagram Thursday, Union shared a picture of her kissing on top of Wade’s head and revealing that it was the moment when she and her husband let down their guard and looked forward to meeting their daughter.

“On this night we decided to embrace faith that our lil miracle @kaaviajames would make it into our arms,” she wrote. “We held onto each other in joy and peace and allowed ourselves to look forward to her arrival.”

The Being Mary Jane star discussed in her book We’re Going to Need More Wine that she has experienced at least eight miscarriages, and even talked about them on an episode of Dr. Oz in July.

“Initially, I didn’t know what the issue was. I got off birth control, I got married, and I was ready to start a family,” Union said. “I didn’t think there was going to be any problem, and there was. So I was always having these early miscarriages. Some from IVF, some just naturally happening on [their] own.”

The actress went on to share her deep feelings about the struggles of trying to start a family.

“[To] families who have been on their own unique fertility family creation journey, hope can feel like a cruel joke that plays on repeat,” she added. “You stop letting yourself get excited, and you don’t dare utter any updates. You carry it all. It can feel isolating and depressing. You wonder if you are defective. You are not. You wonder if you are worthy. You are.”

Baby Kaavia even has her own Instagram page (presumably run by her doting parents) with funny captions and where she modeled an outfit gifted by Empire actress Taraji P. Henson.
