Today, millions will observe National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day in an effort to reduce the number of HIV/AIDS infections affecting gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), while MSM represents only 2 percent of the U.S. population, they accounted for 69.8 percent of all new diagnoses, including 3 percent of whom were also injecting drugs.

Out of America’s total population living with HIV, an estimated 615,400 were MSM, the CDC states. Of these MSM, an estimated 17 percent had an undiagnosed HIV infection.
