Former Cosby Show star Geoffrey Owens went from being publicly ridiculed for being a cashier at a local grocery store in New Jersey to attending the 2019 SAG Awards on Sunday night.

"Somewhere in the middle of the road in my life, I found myself in the dark wood of unemployment and debt, but instead of switching careers like a sane person," Owens said, poking fun at his fall from glory.

In September 2018, a photo of the actor checking out a customer went viral. He later received a lambasting from individuals for having a regular job despite formerly being in the spotlight.

"I took a job at a local Trader Joe's to see if I could hang in there with my career. It's actually worked out pretty well," Owens said in the opening monologue.

The harsh criticism led other entertainers, including Tyler Perry and Nicki Minaj, to offer help to the actor through acting gigs and monetary donations.

"I'm Geoffrey Owens, and I am an actor!" he exclaimed at the close of his speech.
