Now that the controversial case involving George Zimmerman over the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin has finally went to trial, his attorney, Mark O'Mara, is asking for a new judge. After filing papers Monday to request a replacement for Circuit Judge Jessica Reckseidler, O'Mara argued that her husband may present a conflict of interest. Judge Recksiedler's husband has ties to the Zimmerman's case through his association with Mark NeJame, a legal analysis who works for CNN. While Jason Jarrett Recksiedler is the law partner of NeJame, O'Mara said "proper separation" could be a problem unless Recksiedler reclused herself from the case.
There was no immediate word on the judge's response to O'Mara's motion, but a bond hearing is set to take place this Friday. 28-year-old George Zimmerman is scheduled to be arraigned on the second degree murder charge on May 29 and could face life in prison if convicted. If Zimmerman's attorney is able to get a new judge, this could be another interesting twist in a tale that has already had enough turns to fill a daytime soap opera. Add to the fact that several national news media organizations are among those asking Judge Recksiedler to unseal court documents in the murder case, and you can only imagine how the rest of this week will go.
