NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell commented on why Colin Kaepernick remained unsigned to a team since he opted out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers in March 2017.
Goodell, at a press conference in Atlanta Wednesday ahead of Sunday's Super Bowl LIII, was asked about the former quarterback, saying the decision falls on the teams, according to Sports Illustrated.
"I think if a team decides that Colin Kaepernick or any other player can help their team win, that's what they'll do," Goodell said. "They want to win and they make those decisions individually in the best interest of their club."
The commissioner later reinforced his opinion, saying, "Our clubs are the ones that make decisions of players they want on their roster."
Kaepernick courted controversy when he began kneeling during the national anthem during the 2016-2017 season to protest police brutality. He’s faced backlash from fans of the NFL and even President Donald Trump, who claimed that he was disrespecting the flag and U.S. troops.
He is suing the league and team owners, saying they colluded against him to keep him out of the NFL.
