A Pompano Beach man was shot and killed by police after officers responded to a call about a domestic disturbance, Broward Palm Beach News Times reports.

When they arrive, officials say they were directed to the backyard, where a man was holding a knife. Both deputies opened fire.

Neighbors who witnessed the shooting say 56-year-old Gregory Frazier, who lived at the home where the shooting took place, was shot in the back six times. Police have yet to confirm that claim.

Frazier’s sister reportedly had called 911 because he had been arguing with her daughter. She told dispatchers he had the small, Swiss Army-style pocket knife that he always carried.

By the time officers arrived, the argument was over and Frazier was sitting outside in his yard eating. Frazier’s nephew, Quartaze Woodard, who was at the scene, says three deputies showed up and told his uncle to get down on the ground. Frazier responded, “Leave me alone” and the deputies repeated the order.

Again, Frazier asked them to leave him alone. Woodard says the officers them shot and handcuffed him. Officials say that after removing the handcuffs once they realized he was unresponsive, they attempted to perform CPR.

But was too late and Frazier was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officers who killed Frazier, a Black man, were white. Residents of Broward County say the incident is an example of why Pompano Beach in particular, needs officers who better reflect the populations they serve.

“It’s too much, community activist and friend of the Frazier family said. “There has to be change. They need to face criminal charges. If I kill someone, I’m going to jail. They shouldn’t be out there on the streets.”

The incident is under investigation and both deputies have been placed on administrative leave.
