Hampton University’s track and field team is lucky to be alive after a bus they were riding in caught on fire on Saturday.
Over 40 members of the team were on their way back from a competition in South Carolina when the engine caught fire in North Carolina, said Gordon Deno, emergency management director for Wilson County.
Wilson County emergency management said in a press release that the bus driver “did an excellent job” getting the students off the bus before it was engulfed, according to WRIC. “Great teamwork tonight for a charter bus that caught fire in I-95.”
"The team was safely evacuated with zero student-athletes harmed and the fire was extinguished,” Hampton University’s sports spokesman Jim Heath said in a statement to the station. “They returned home safely in the early hours Sunday morning.”
