Netflix’s newest original series by Jenji Kohan (creator of Weeds) is based on Piper Kerman’s true story and novel of the same name. It centers on a young woman (Piper) thrown into the clink for smuggling drug money for her ex-lesbian lover during a “finding herself” college phase 10 years ago. Now she’s got to leave her fiancé Larry and her cushy Brooklyn apartment in exchange for close quarters living amongst a cast of raw, kooky and unexpected characters.

We meet Piper’s new “roommates,” like, “Red,” the lunch-lady– who will serve you a tampon if you’re not careful. We empathize with the ladies on the inside by finding out their dramatic and, at times, humorous backstories as they collaborate in an effort to survive prison life and combat the creepy, corrupt guards who run it.
