A mix of agricultural drought, financial instability, and political corruption are why the UN predicts that 18 million people will go hungry in West Africa this year. The report, which came from Geneva on Tuesday, will hopefully spark ideas on how to solve this problem
According to W. David Gressly, the U.N.’s regional humanitarian coordinator for nine countries in the arid Sahel region of Africa, two million children under the age of five will suffer health problems due to malnutrition this year. Gressly believes this hunger crisis will be much worse than the two previous in the Sahel, because people have not had time to recover from the two “previous shocks” caused by drought and failed harvests.
