When two sharp musical minds join forces in the recording studio, the end result can either be truly awesome or utterly regrettable. Happily, the partnership of soul singer Eric Roberson and Atlanta-based guitarist, songwriter and producer Jermaine Hardsoul (Musiq Soulchild, Carl Thomas, Jagged Edge) scores a perfect three-pointer on their latest sexy ’90s-school R&B joint, “What We Started/Yearning For Your Love.”

Roberson brings his usual warm, supple tenor game to ask his lady for a badly needed pause in their relationship for clarity’s sake. And Jermaine surprises in the second half of the video with his own capable vocal rendition of the Gap Band’s most famous ballad. He stays soulfully true to Charlie Wilson’s slick, gorgeous delivery while blinging the song out over an ATLien rhythm bed of MPC beats that’ll knock lovely in your speakers.

This simple, eye-pleasing video features Hardsoul as quite the player—romancing and serenading an assortment of beautiful mahogany women—and both songs are shortened in the video, surely in order to whet your palette to hear both jams in full.

Download Jermaine Hardsoul’s lead single, “We Can’t Finish,” on Amazon or eMusic, or better yet, get his indie EP Hardsoul Sound on iTunes for 50 minutes of iPod goodness that’ll please fans of sweet-spot-hitting nu-soul with a smooth finish.

You can keep track of Jermaine Hardsoul’s movements on TwitterFacebook and his website.
