When the Trump administration announced a proposed plan that would cut SNAP recipients’ money for food in half and replace it with a box of food items, people were bothered to say the least.
Under the new proposed plan, in addition to losing their funds, recipients would also have to travel to a designated location to pick up a food box.
Ick.
Now, according to The Iowa Gazette, advocates in the state are pushing back on the proposed plan.
So it is no surprise that Iowa advocates are against the plan, with roughly 12 percent of the state’s residents benefiting for the national Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
The proposal, which was released last week, details how the change the the program would save the country more than $213 billion over the next ten years. The plan would rollback with more than $17 billion by 2019.
According to the USDA, each Iowan receives $111 a month in SNAP benefits.
Currently 381,000 recipients of SNAP live in the state, and roughly 70 percent are in families with children.
