R&B newcomer Jacquees, 24, doubled down again on his claims of being the king of the genre while standing in front of old-school legend Keith Sweat, 57.
In a video posted by TMZ on Monday, Jacquees interrupted Sweat to reaffirm the controversial claim he made last week.
“I just want to let everybody know that I’m the king of R&B right now, for this generation,” said the Cash Money artist. “I understand who done came and who done did that and that, but now it’s my turn: Jacquees, the king.”
When the cameraman declared Sweat the original king and asked if he had any interest in passing down the torch, Jacquees, who was an earshot away, interjected:
“This the king from back then. I’m the king for right now. This is Keith Sweat.”
Sweat asserted that he’s still a prominent figure. Jacquees, however, responded, “He getting the bag but 16-25 is my generation. I’m the king.”
The veteran R&B star bit his tongue while the novice singer made the remark. Soon after, someone in his camp asked for the camera to be cut off.
In October, Sweat spoke while on Power 105.1’s morning show The Breakfast Club about his longevity and the changing landscape of R&B music.
“I’m glad to still be able to do it and show these young boys consistency,” he told the radio show hosts.
Several artists from the past and present have chimed in on the debate.
Later in the evening, Jacquees apologized for the confrontation after Sweat explained what he was telling the TMZ cameraman.
“[Jacquees] happened to hear ‘king’ and ran up on me and said, ‘I’m the king of my generation,” Sweat said to singer Tank and radio personality Big Tigger. “The only thing he heard was ‘king,’ so he needs to apologize.”
