Jordan Peele’s latest film, Us, debuted with an impressive $70 million in
The box-office smash, starring Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke, also broke the record for highest-grossing opening weekend for an original R-rated film, beating out 2012 comedy Ted.
Us far surpassed early estimates indicating the film would bring in around $38 million, and nearly doubled opening weekend numbers for Peele’s first film, Get Out, which debuted to $33 million.
“Put simply, Jordan Peele is a genius,” Jim Orr, Universal’s president of domestic distribution, said in a statement to Variety. “He’s managed to tap into something that the domestic box office can’t get enough of. People can’t wait to see what he does next.”
