No charges will be brought against the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer in the September shooting death of a man in University City, the Charlotte Observer reports.

43-year-old Keith Lamont Scott was shot Sept. 20 in a confrontation with officers outside his apartment. Officer Brentley Vinson released the fatal bullet. Video footage of the incident shows police calling on Scott to drop his gun, then four shots are heard.

A gun, ankle holster and marijuana were found at the scene.

The Charlotte community protested in response to Scott’s death for a number of nights following the shooting. Officer Vinson remained on paid-leave while the CMPD, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Justice Department launched separate investigations.

Charlotte saw two nights of rioting and nearly a week of street demonstrations as a result of Scott’s death. Dozens of arrests and the death of one man in uptown took place in addition to the street violence.

Scott, a father or seven, was the son of a police detective and a former mall security officer. He suffered from a traumatic brain injury sustained during a motorcycle crash in South Carolina in Nov. 2015.
