Golden State Warriors player Kevin Durant surprised four Bay area kids by promising to pay for their first year of college.

Durant has been a part of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula and mentored kids at the organization, according to a video posted by ESPN.

The basketball star has spent time with them and has heard their life stories, which he says was similar to his.

“I grew up in a similar situation,” said Durant. “For kids that have been through so much already in their short lives. [For them] to be able to get up the next day and keep pushing … I was very proud just to get to meet them.”

He says that the Boys & Girls Club offers stability in kids’ lives, and when he was part of the club he had mentors who supported him.

“I didn’t think I had a home and yet the Boys & Girls Club felt more like home than anywhere else,” Alysia Demery, a student who will have her first year of college paid for, said during a speech at an event by the organization.
