South Los Angeles rapper Nipsey Hussle was laid to rest Thursday (April 11) after a funeral at the Staples Center during which several loved ones reflected on the MC and community leader. Longtime girlfriend Lauren London read a moving text message exchange between them written shortly before his passing, and back tears as she remembered his legacy in front of thousands of fans and supporters.

Hussle’s birthname, Ermias, translates to “God Will Rise” in the Eritrean language of Tigrinya. Hussle's father is Eritrean, and his mother is African-American.

London later posted a photo of them together at the 2019 Roc Nation Pre-Grammy Brunch in Los Angeles, writing, “King Ermias! Love you forever and even after that.”

Tributes to the Grammy-nominated MC and prayers for his family have been posted by a slew of notable names, including Beyoncé, Rihanna, Drake, LeBron James, Ava DuVernay, and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.

The entertainer and entrepreneur was gunned down on March 31 in the parking lot of his clothing store, The Marathon, in South Central Los Angeles. Eric Holder, 29, has been arrested and charged with firing the shots that killed the rapper and injured two others.
