A new short film is showing us the highs and lows of coming out to your loved ones.

Refinery29’s “Shatterbox Anthology” film series seeks to cultivate and spotlight the voices of women directors who tell stories that live outside the narrow lens of the male-dominated film industry.

In its latest film, Out Again, the series centers on lesbian a woman who must repeatedly come out to her mother, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease.

According to a press release on the film directed by and starring Robin Cloud, Cat elopes and marries her girlfriend, Liz. What is supposed to be a happy moment for the newlyweds turns complicated very quickly. Cat’s mother, who suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease, does not remember that her daughter is a lesbian. So Cat is forced to repeatedly come out to her mother over and over again.

“Refinery29’s Shatterbox Anthology a collection of short films, told through the lens of female storytellers, share a common theme tied to the dynamics of power,” the release states. “The initiative provides emerging female filmmakers with support and continued opportunities to realize their creative vision across multiple platforms.”

The film, which is an integration of humor and compassion, is Cloud’s first narrative short. It premieres this Sunday, Mar. 19 at 6 pm EST. You can watch it in full at www.refinery29.com/shatterbox. Check out a preview of Out Again in the trailer below.
