It’s been more than 25 years since famed music producer, Dr. Dre’s, altercation with journalist Dee Barnes took place.
In 1991, the “Still D.R.E.” musician physically assaulted Barnes by throwing her through a door at a Los Angeles nightclub.
The assault was reintroduced to the limelight in 2015 when the biographical film, Straight Outta Compton, was released.
In an op-ed written by Barnes, the professional writer detailed a traumatic experience in which she says the former NWA rapper beat her, attempted to throw her down a flight of stairs and stomped on her fingers.
In 2015, Dre expressed remorse for his actions saying, “I deeply regret what I did and know that it has forever impacted all of our lives.”
And in his new HBO docuseries, The Defiant Ones, which aired earlier this week, he gives an in-depth explanation for his actions.
“Any man that puts his hands on a female is a f**king idiot,” Dre says in the docuseries directed by Allen Hughes. “He’s out of his f**king mind, and I was out of my f**king mind at the time. I f**ked up, I paid for it, I’m sorry for it, I apologize for it.”
The 52-year-old rapper said the assault had been like a “dark cloud” following him for the duration of his career.
“It’s a major blemish on who I am as a man, and every time it comes up, it just makes me feel f‑‑‑ed up.”
