Isley and her mommy. Tami Garcia adopted her daughter from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2011. She is now 3. "She is my pride and joy."
At 12 months old, Isley Rahwa officially joined the Garcia family in her new home in Washington, D.C.

Cousin Dain Thorpe and little Isley. "My daughter is so loved by my family. They even think we look alike," Tami says.
Isley, Black Santa and Tami. "The laws are so tough domestically. They make it hard for families that want to adopt. I couldn't have a child for three months and the mother changes her mind."
At play: Isley and Tami. "We have so much fun I can't get enough of her. I went away to Los Angeles without her for nine days and I will never do that again! I missed her so much."
Alemayhew, 12, is the son Tami sponsors in Addis Ababa. As his mom from afar, she does all for him that any loving parent would do. "We Skype. We email every day. He has a difficult story. He has no one... but me."
Tami sent photos to Isley's bio-mom. "I told her I would send her updates. She couldn't believe that I actually stood by my word."
"Isley acts so much like me. It's hard for me to believe that I didn't give birth to her sometimes," her mom says.
The sister Isley. Tami is a member of Buno Ethio Mamas, a group of women of color who have adopted from Ethiopia. "Our kids are like cousins. And not only do we celebrate being Black, we celebrate Ethiopia."
Tami's joy. "My heart beats for this child. I live my life for her. I can't imagine my life without her. I am so grateful and lucky to be her mother."
