There’s really nothing quite like a few days away from it all—sunbathing on a beach, hot-air ballooning over valleys or total seclusion, feeling the stress drift away in one of the most scenic hill countries in the world, Sri Lanka.

Possibly one of Mother Nature’s most beautiful creations, Sri Lanka is a varied and scenic country, offering what most travelers would consider the best of both worlds, exploration of its culture and endless stretches of tropical beaches. What makes Sri Lanka a truly unique destination, however, is its spectacular scenery, filled with intricate paddy fields, rising mountains and pounding waterfalls. Consider this your personal invitation to escape into complete serenity.

So how can one discover the richness of Sri Lanka, from mountain lodging to adventure travel that doesn’t comprise your need for luxury or break the bank?

The Journey

Depending on your starting point, a flight to Sri Lanka can be costly. Eliminating unnecessary expenses along the way is important and frees up room for splurging in other areas. How does a seven-hour scenic train ride sound?

Seven hours may seem like a lengthy time to spend on a train while in the midst of your holiday travel, but when you factor in the undeniable—that this is one of the most breathtaking experiences you’ll encounter—it’ll surely be a time well spent. The ride from Kandy to Ella (or the reverse) is incredible!

In order for your journey to live up to this bold statement, there are a few things that must be done in advance:

Ticket purchase: Most trains have different classes to choose from. Select the private AC luxury cabin, which allows you to escape the crowds and have access to a separate observation deck. When selecting your seat, choose the right-hand side; that way, most of the views from Kandy to Ella will be visible from the comfort of your seat.

It’s important to purchase your tickets in advance. Luxury cabin tickets can be bought via Expo Rail for $13-20USD.

Quick Tips: WiFi is available, but it can be very spotty; there are outlets next to every seat. Food, coffee and water will be severed at regular intervals, however, it’s recommended you bring  your own snacks if you’re a picky eater.
