Some Interesting Facts About Engagement in the U.S.

Thirty-seven percent of couples get engaged around this time of year, and in America, the average person looking to get married spends more than $6,300 a year, according to a study released by The Knot.

The study, sent via email to EBONY, also found that 1 in 4 American grooms reported “meticulously” planning their proposal “down to the last detail.”

The average proposer spent 4.4 months planning the big event, with 7 percent of proposers reporting spending a year or more planning how to pop the question, according to the study.

Other key findings from The Knot 2017 Jewelry & Engagement Study are as follows:

  • Even the best-laid plans still left a majority of proposers (60 percent) feeling nervous before asking for their significant other’s hand in marriage, up from 54 percent in 2011.
  • Average time spent looking for the perfect ring was 3.5 months
  • The average price of an engagement ring is not $6,351 (up from $5,095 in 2011)
  • Proposers look at an average of 26 rings before purchasing one
  • The average carat size for a Center Stone is 1.2 carats and the average Carat Size for the total ring is 1.8 carats

The study also found online dating to be the most popular way for spouses-to-be to meet, what 19 percent of brides reporting meeting their significant other through online dating and 17 percent on social media.

Couples also discuss marriage and their engagement long before the proposal, with 1 in four couples reportedly discussing marriage two or more years before becoming engaged. Couples also speak candidly about having children (96 percent), finances (90 percent), pets (80 percent) and sex (80 percent).
