A South London man donated his kidney to the love of his life says he’s fine with her rejecting his proposal.

According to Vibe, Simon Louis and Mary Emmanuelle first met in the 1990s at a club in London.

They have been together for eight years, and in one of the most selfless acts of love one could think of, Louis donated one of his kidneys to Emmanuelle after finding out she had end-stage kidney disease in 2014.

“I couldn’t believe it – I had been given a death sentence. My name was put on a ‘dead donor’ list. I could only wait,” Emmanuelle recalled.

Shortly after discovering he was a match, Louis proposed to Emmanuelle. But it wasn’t received in the way that you’d expect.

“I let him down gently by saying I’d have to think about it,” she said. “I think I’d worry if we got married it would in some way damage our special friendship and also I don’t want to get wed until I’m fully better health-wise.”

Despite the rejection, Louis said he doesn’t regret anything he did for Emmanuelle.

“I didn’t think twice about it. There’s no question about doing something like that for someone you love.”
