Although there’s no magic number for how often happy couples get busy between the sheets, researchers have nailed down a figure for how many times blissful couples have sex.

According to a study that appeared in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, the average adult currently enjoys sexual intercouse 54 times a year, which equates to roughly once a week.

Another study surveyed more than 30,000 Americans over a 40-year period and discovered that a once-a-week frequency was the standard for happiness among couples. Those who reported having sex more than once did not report being happier, and those who reported going more than a week without sex reported less fulfillment, the study said.

“Closeness and connection is a human need,” Dr. Sanam Hafeez, a NYC-based licensed clinical psychologist, told NBC. “When in a long-term relationship, it’s important to reconnect through sex. The brain chemicals released during sex further enhances bonding.”
