This past summer, JAY-Z released arguably the most vulnerable album of his career. The rapper and business mogul didn’t hold back on 4:44, with many praising him for his transparency and easily referring to the work as a classic.

But Hov’s purging didn’t stop when he released his latest album. During a rare and very personal interview with T Magazinethe “Song Cry” entertainer got even more candid about his relationship with his megastar wife, Beyoncé, and how the release of Lemonade personally affected him.

“There was never a point where it was like, ‘I’m making this album.’ I was right there the entire time,” he states. “You know, most people walk away, and like divorce rate is like 50 percent or something ’cause most people can’t see themselves. The hardest thing is seeing pain on someone’s face that you caused, and then have to deal with yourself. So, you know, most people don’t want to do that. You don’t want to look inside yourself. And so you walk away.”

JAY-Z also hinted that the couple had been working on a joint album at the time.

” … we were using our art almost like a therapy session. And we started making music together. And then the music she was making at that time was further along,” he says. “So her album came out as opposed to the joint album that we were working on. Um, we still have a lot of that music. And this is what it became. There was never a point where it was like, ‘I’m making this album.’ I was right there the entire time.”

Whoa. Lemonade, which dropped last year, revealed to the public for the first time that there was trouble in their marriage.

While we may place celebrities on a pedestal, let us all remember that they’re human just like you and me.
