A Brooklyn, New York, man was detained by the U.S. Secret service for stalking and harassing Malia Obama, The New York Daily News reports.
Malia, who is the eldest of the Obama daughters, was reportedly slated to start an internship with film producer Harvey Weinstein after attending the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.
Jair Nilton Cardoso reportedly went to the fourth floor of the Tribeca building where former President Barack Obama’s 18-year-old daughter interns on April 10. According to officials, he allegedly put a sign against a window and loudly begged her to marry him.
He was kicked out by two Secret Service agents assigned to Malia’s detail. But two days later, the 30-year-old followed Obama out of a building in the West Village where she is also interning. Secret Service agents who recognized Cardoso stopped him and told him to leave her alone.
The next day, Cardoso was reportedly interviewed at his residence. After concluding he had psychiatric issues, agents took Cardoso to a local hospital for evaluation.
Authorities are determining if stalking or harassment charges against Cardoso should be filed.
