Mara Brock Akil is doing a new thing this season. Wednesday, the screenwriter and television producer announced the launch of content platform, In the Land of Mara (ITLOM). Through the website, which resembles a personal blog of sorts, "Mara reintroduces herself through personal essays touching on her life experiences, what inspires her, and the simple things that bring her joy," a press release obtained by EBONY explains.

In an interview with Harper's Bazaar, Mara explained that in addition to screenwriting, she has always possessed a desire to own a magazine. When she turned 50, she chose to pursue that dream. "This website offers me an opportunity to be in direct communication with an audience I have been having conversations with for over 20 years," Mara explained. “ITLOM is also a part of my healing as a person and my growth as a writer."

The Girlfriends creator also shared that while she has mastered the art of expressing herself through the characters that she creates, she wants to also use her "pen" to be reflective and share personal truths with her audience. Amongst the digital platform's unique features is the Writing Colony, through which the former Being Mary Jane showrunner will offer guidance for emerging writers.

In addition to the launch of ITLOM, Mara also announced a bag collaboration with accessories designer Agnes Baddoo called Aged Sac 2 Natural, a limited-edition series of 27 pre-aged, handcrafted leather sacs. For Mara, having the right tote bag is essential to her ability to fulfill her purpose as a writer. “Carrying around my computer and pens and journals and sweater in a great bag is a prideful moment,” she says. “It is also a necessary one, in that I believe as a creative, everything is or can be our inspiration. I’m inspired by the beauty of my bag. And that small happy vibration motivates me to do one of the hardest things ever for a writer—get somewhere and sit in the chair and write.”

Aged Sac 2 Natural totes will be available for purchase on the ITLOM website.
