One of the most iconic moments from Star Wars: The Last Jedi is Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) emerging unscathed from debris after enduring a hail of fire from the First Order on the red sale plant. As the character steps forward, he nonchalantly brushes his shoulder off.

According to Business Insider, Mark Hamill the actor who plays Luke revealed the inspiration behind that moment in the film. While speaking on a panel at SXSW, Hamill said former President Barack Obama influenced the “dirt off your shoulder” movement.

Obama made the gesture that has now become a favorite social media GIF on his campaign trail in 2008. During the Democratic primaries, Hillary Clinton was attacking Obama in her speeches. When he was asked about the harsh criticism, he responded, “When you’re running for President, you’ve got to expect it; you’ve just kinda got to let it…,” while making the infamous hand gesture.

To be fair to history, Obama was influenced by JAY-Z and the 2003 Timbaland-produced anthem “Dirt Off Your Shoulders” about brushing off your haters. He’s performed the gesture several times throughout his presidency.
