UPDATE:

Are you sorry because you’re sorry or sorry because you got called out? Princess Michael has apologized for wearing a racially insensitive brooch during the Queen’s lunch, which was attended by Prince Harry’s fiance, Megan Markle. According to reports, a spokes  a spokesperson for the wife of the Queen’s cousin says Michael is “very sorry and distressed” she wore her Blackamoor brooch to the luncheon, and that Michael was not trying to insult Meghan or any people of color.

It was only a matter of time until news broke of Meghan Markle’s pushback from the royal family, but we’d at least hoped people would keep it cute until after the holidays.

Recently at the Queen’s Annual Christmas lunch at the Buckingham Palace, Princess Michael of Kent, the Queen’s first cousin, was photoed wearing a “blackamoor” brooch on her left shoulder. For those who don’t know, “Blackamoor” is a genre of art or jewelry originating in 16th century Venice that has been criticized for promoting “racist” imagery. Many blackamoor figures portray exoticized images of servants and slaves of African descent. Watch the video via TMZ below:

And for those considering that the Princess’ accessory is just a coincidence, consider this. Aside from wearing the untimeliness of Princess Michael wearing the brooch on the day she met Markle, this is not the royal figure’s first racially-charged incident. Back in 2004, Princess Michael had to explain herself after being overheard at a New York restaurant telling a group of Black diners to “go back to the colonies.” However, her defense was racially-charged with stereotypes, when she released the following statement:

“I traveled on African buses. I wanted to be a writer. I wanted experiences from Cape Town to right up in northern Mozambique. I had this adventure with these absolutely adorable, special people and to call me racist: it’s a knife through the heart because I really love these people.

I even pretended years ago to be an African, a half-caste African, but because of my light eyes I did not get away with it, but I dyed my hair black.”

In other news, Prince Harry and his bride-to-be Markle recently released their gorgeous engagement photos and looked absolutely flawless and in love. Nothing can rain on the parade of these too – no man, woman or brooch.
