Michael Che has a whole lot to be grateful for this holiday season: The “Weekend Update” segment co-host has just been named the first Black head writer for NBC’s longstanding sketch-comedy series Saturday Night Live (SNL).

Che and his “Weekend Update” co-host, Colin Jost, will join longtime SNL head writers Bryan Tucker and Kent Sublette, according to Vulture.

The stand-up comic was originally brought on to SNL as a writer back in 2013 amid controversy surrounding its lack of diversity, both on-camera and within the writer’s room. Over the course of the show’s 43 years, the head writers of the iconic series have primarily been White and male.

Tina Fey was named the show’s first female head writer in 1999. Leslie Jones, who was originally hired as a writer, is currently the only Black female cast member on the series.
